One-minute guide to selecting an industrial vibration sensor!
There are many manufacturers of sensors, all labeled "for vibration monitoring". Choosing the right one for your equipment can be a challenging task. The process of selecting a vibration sensor can often be filtered down to a few specific questions. By answering the following questions for your specific application, you will be able to find the best vibration monitoring solution.
Question:
What are you measuring?
Answer:
● Raw vibration data, RMS (root mean square) transmitter data, or both?
● Do you want to measure acceleration, velocity, or displacement?
● Do you want to measure temperature?
● Single-axis, dual-axis, or tri-axis measurement?
Question:
What is the sensitivity (range)?
Answer:
For standard applications, the sensitivity of the accelerometer is 100mV/g (corresponding to a range of 50g). For low frequency applications or low amplitude applications, the typical sensitivity is 500mV/g (corresponding to a range of 10g). Industrial applications using 4-20mA transmitters typically use a range of 20mm/s or 25.4mm/s.
Question:
What is the frequency of vibration?
Answer:
Physical structures and dynamic systems respond differently to different excitation frequencies, as do vibration sensors. A piezoelectric material is essentially a high-pass filter, so it cannot measure a zero-frequency signal.
The sensor, as a single-degree-of-freedom dynamic system, has an intrinsic frequency. At the point of the intrinsic frequency, the signal is greatly amplified, resulting in a dramatic change in sensitivity and possibly signal saturation.
To avoid signal saturation due to transducer resonance, most industrial accelerometers have built-in first or second order RC filters. It is important to choose a sensor with an available frequency range that covers all the frequencies you want to measure.
